What to expect

Winter is different across Canada. Vancouver and Victoria are mild and rainy. Most other cities have snow and temperatures well below zero for several months.

Dress in layers

  • A warm, windproof coat with a hood.
  • A hat (toque), gloves or mittens, and a scarf.
  • Waterproof boots with a good grip for ice.
  • Layers under your coat that you can take off indoors.

Plan for storms

Check the weather forecast every day and follow weather warnings. Keep a small kit at home with water, food, a flashlight and batteries. If you drive, use winter tires and keep a scraper and blanket in the car.

Stay healthy

Frostbite can happen quickly on exposed skin in very cold wind. Cover your face and hands, and go inside if your skin goes white or numb.
