Warning signs
- The landlord says they are abroad and cannot show you the unit.
- The rent is much lower than similar places nearby.
- They ask for a deposit by wire transfer, gift cards or cryptocurrency.
- They ask for your SIN, passport or bank login before you sign.
- They push you to decide today.
Protect yourself
- See the unit in person or by live video call, and check that the person can open the door.
- Search the address and the photos online to see if they appear in other listings.
- Pay only after you sign a lease, and keep receipts.
If it happens
